Principal Investigator

Sun Jae Jung, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Yonsei University College of Medicine, Korea, where she teaches epidemiological methods and causal inference.

Her research program uses advanced epidemiological methods to elucidate the mutual association between mental and physical health. Recent work has focused on the bi-directional association between cardiovascular, endocrine, and reproductive health and major mental health problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder. Another major focus of her work has been on the interaction between biological and social factors in explaining suicide attempts. Dr. Jung serves as Principal investigator or Co-Principal Investigator for several research studies that have received in excess of $20 million from the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare and other national agencies. At the International Symposium on Resilience Research, Dr. Jung received the Young Investigator Award in 2019, the Young Epidemiologist Award from the Korean Society of Epidemiology in 2021, and the Hanmi Young Medical Scientist Award from the Korean Medical Women’s Association in 2024. Dr. Jung completed her MD from Yonsei University College of Medicine and received her professional qualification in Preventive Medicine from Seoul National University College of Medicine. She also holds a PhD in Epidemiology from Seoul National University and was a Yerby Fellow at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

연세대학교 의과대학 부교수. 연세대학교 의과대학을 졸업하고 서울대학교 의과대학 예방의학교실에서 의과학 박사학위를 받았다. 하버드 T. H. 챈(Chan) 보건대학원에서 여비(Yerby) 펠로우십으로 정신역학 그룹에서 박사후과정을 지냈다. 최근에는 매사추세츠 종합병원(MGH) 및 하버드대학교 의과대학에서 방문연구원을 했으며, 현재 연세대학교 예방의학교실에서 연구하고 있다. 주로 인구집단 단위에서의 우울증과 외상 후 스트레스 장애, 수면, 불안 장애, 자살, 인지기능에 대한 역학 논문을 출판했고, 국가와 사회 수준에서의 트라우마와 차별이 인간의 신체에 새겨지는 생체적 메커니즘을 밝히기 위한 연구를 수행하고 있다. 역서로는 『사회 역학』(제2판)과 『역학연구와 임상시험에 대한 비판적 평가』가 있다. 국제레질리언스학회에서 2019년 젊은 연구자 상을 수상했으며, 한국역학회에서 2021년 젊은 역학자 상을, 한국여의사회에서 2024년 한미 젊은 의학자 학술상을 수상했다.
