Principal Investigator

Sun Jae Jung, MD, PhD, MS is an Associate Professor of Preventive Medicine at Yonsei University College of Medicine in Seoul, South Korea. Her research focuses on suicide and self-harm epidemiology, population mental health, social determinants of mental health, trauma, and psychiatric epidemiology, using large-scale population data and longitudinal cohorts.

She leads She leads multiple longitudinal research platforms, including PROCESS-A, CC-MHS, and MeRIT, spanning adolescence, and community populations. PROCESS-A is the Korea’s first longitudinal cohort specifically established to investigate suicide and self-harm among adolescents, with a particular focus on the transition from suicidal ideation and self-harm to suicidal behavior.

Her research focuses on the bidirectional relationships between mental and physical health, with particular emphasis on cardiovascular, endocrine, and reproductive conditions in relation to major mental disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder. A central pillar of her work is suicide prevention research. She is the Principal Investigator of the first large-scale, population-based cohort study on suicide and self-harm among children and adolescents in Korea, integrating biological, clinical, and social determinants of risk.

Dr. Jung has served as Principal Investigator or Co–Principal Investigator on multiple nationally funded studies, securing over USD 20 million in competitive research funding from the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare and other national agencies. Her work has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Young Investigator Award (International Symposium on Resilience Research, 2019), the Young Epidemiologist Award (Korean Society of Epidemiology, 2021), and the Hanmi Young Medical Scientist Award (Korean Medical Women’s Association, 2024).

Dr. Jung received her MD from Yonsei University College of Medicine, completed specialist training in Preventive Medicine at Seoul National University College of Medicine, and earned her PhD in Epidemiology from Seoul National University. She was also a Yerby Fellow at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

정선재 교수는 연세대학교 의과대학 예방의학교실 부교수이자 예방의학 전문의이며 정신역학자이다. 연세대학교 의과대학을 졸업하고 서울대학교 의과대학에서 의과학 박사학위를 받았으며, 미국 하버드대학교 T. H. 챈 보건대학원 정신역학 그룹에서 Yerby Fellowship 연구원으로 박사후과정을 수행했다. 이후 매사추세츠 종합병원(MGH), 하버드 의과대학, 브로드연구소(Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard)와 협력하며 정신건강과 공중보건 분야의 연구를 이어오고 있다.

그의 연구는 “왜 어떤 사회에서는 더 많은 사람이 함께 아프고, 함께 회복하는가?”라는 질문에서 출발한다. 우울증, 외상후스트레스장애(PTSD), 자살, 청소년 정신건강, 트라우마, 정신건강의 사회적 결정요인(Social Determinants of Mental Health)을 중심으로, 개인의 질병을 넘어 사회와 정책이 정신건강에 미치는 영향을 연구하고 있다.

현재 청소년 자해·자살 전향적 코호트(PROCESS-A), 지역사회 정신건강 장기추적 코호트(CC-MHS), 제주4·3 세대 간 트라우마 연구, 장기이식 공여자의 정신건강 연구 등 다양한 국가 연구과제를 책임연구자로 수행하고 있으며, 빅데이터와 코호트 연구를 통해 정신질환과 자살을 예측하고 예방하기 위한 근거를 만들고 있다. 또한 국무조정실 범정부 생명지킴추진본부 자살예방정책 자문단 위원으로 활동하며, 연구 결과가 실제 국가 정신건강 및 자살예방 정책으로 이어질 수 있도록 정책 개발에도 참여하고 있다.

지금까지 120편이 넘는 국제학술논문을 발표했으며, 국내 최초의 정신건강역학 교과서 『정신역학의 기초: 방법과 활용』을 집필하였다. 또한 『사회역학』(제2판), 『역학연구와 임상시험에 대한 비판적 평가』를 우리말로 옮겼다. 국제레질리언스학회 젊은 연구자상, 한국역학회 젊은 역학자상, 한국여자의사회 한미 젊은 의학자 학술상 등을 수상했다.
